SUMMARY
Raised on the shores of New Jersey in Sea Isle City, thirty miles south of Atlantic City. Began boating, fishing, and water-skiing and many other marine activities at an early age. Trapped bait fish in the inland water way for fishing piers in the area. Worked as Mate on Party Fishing Boat as a teenager through college gaining a lot of experience in small boat handling and engine repair. This work experience lead to a desire to go to sea, and an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy where a B.S. degree in engineering, a commission in the Navel Reserve, and a Third Assistant Engineers License for Steam and Motor Vessels was earned. Completed military obligation by sailing in the merchant marine on freighters, tankers, passenger ships, container ships, and con bulk container ships, and eventually qualified for the highest engine license issued by the U. S.Coast Guard for both steam and motor vessels. Have extensive experience on both steam and motor vessels including all aspects of inspections, shipyard time, and new construction.

SEAGOING EXPERIENCE
First experience with run abouts and small power boats learned to handle them as a child. Worked with brother trapping bait fish for fishing piers as first commercial enterprise. Have owned or used small power boats for decades.
Got first sea going job as 9 to 5 sailor on the CAPT CRAMER, a party fishing, boat that would take fisherman as far as twenty miles off shore to bottom fish. Maritime school was a natural choice to pursue a career at sea. Sea experience is arranged by vessel type and a brief description of work required and responsibilities.
1. FREIGHT VESSELS
Only sailed as Third Engineer for three months and then promoted to Temporary Second Engineer on an emergency basis due to officer shortage created by the Viet Nam War. Stood watch in steam plants, maintained deck machinery, hydraulic systems, and gantry cranes in addition to maintaining the Engine room equipment. Gained early knowledge of boiler water treatment, fuel oil transfer, and bunkering procedures due to immediate promotion. Worked many hours of overtime since ship only had minimum number of engineers required by the certificate to sail. Gained experience much quicker than normal due to political situation. Served aboard the following vessels.
Vessel Type
SS MORMACBAY C3 A
SS AFRICAN GLADE C2
SS AMERICAN RACER Racer Class Vessel
SS EXPORT AGENT* C3
SS PIONEER MING* C4
SS MORMACDRAGO* C3 Automated
SS AFRICAN METEOR* C4
SS DELTA AMERICA Racer Class Vessel
*Served aboard these vessels as Cadet (Sea Year Training at Kings Point 1965 and 1966)

2. PASSENGER SHIPS
Passenger Ships carried extra distillers, ships service generators, large air conditioning machines, large domestic refrigeration systems, refrigerated cargo boxes, large sewage treatment plant, elevators, and required extra maintenance and shipyards. This added to a rapid gain in experience as a marine engineer. In addition to watch standing duties there was a lot of overtime worked maintaining all the extra equipment on board. The boilers required extra maintenance due to the schedule and hard steaming rates. Sailed both as Third and Second Engineer.
Vessel Type
SS MONTEREY Converted Mariner
SS SANTA BARBARA* Converted C2
*Served aboard this vessel as Cadet (Sea Year Training Kings Point 1965 and 1966).
3. TANKERS
Tankers give engineers a unique opportunity to expand their skills. Due to reduced manning to save cost, much overtime is worked to maintain the vessel. Huge cargo pumps on the larger ships must be maintained. Tight schedules and high firing rates of the boilers even in port to pump cargo make getting the required maintenance done a challenge. Served as First Engineer on these vessels.
Vessel Type
SS SANTA CLARA Chemical T5 Tanker
SS SUROULA Crude Oil Tanker T5
SS KENAI Large Crude Oil Carrier
4. CONBULK CONTAINER AND CONTAINER VESSELS
Large container vessels with reduced crews and unmanned engine rooms at night are possibly the most challenging engineering positions today. The Chief Engineer must be able to work on all systems including computers and electronic controls. All engineers are on daywork, and with the change to motor ships due to high fuel cost, the maintenance work is more demanding then on a steam vessel. The Chief must be a "hands on" engineer if the required work is to be accomplished. He must also be an excellent manager and able to mange the time available. Every member of the crew must be a firefighter and aware of the safety requirements and in the engine department the on board training is done by the Chief Engineer. Worked the last seventeen years on this type of vessel as both First and Chief Engineer.
Vessel Type
SS HAWAIAN QUEEN C4 Container Vessel
SS HAWAIAN CITIZEN C3 Container Vessel
SS CALIFORNIAN C4 Container Vessel
SS TRANONEIDA T5 Converted Container Vessel
SS TRANSCHAMPLAIN T5 Converted Container Vessel

5. FISHING VESSELS

CAPT ROBBINS Party Boat
GENERAL INFORMATION
In addition to maintenance and repair, and ships safe operation of the engine room equipment, work as the Chief Engineer on a modern vessel requires management skills, training crew members in all aspects of duties, firefighting skills, and knowledge of many computer programs. Safety inspections, upkeep of equipment with an extensive preventative maintenance programs, annual inspections by U.S.C.G. and continuing machinery surveys by ABS are included in the Chief Engineers scope of duties.
While with APL work included taking delivery of three new vessels out of the shipyard, going on sea trials, working with vendors and regulatory bodies. Attended drydockings and/or shipyard periods for repairs. Very familiar with regulator body and classification society practices and procedures.
